HeadshotsWhat to wear for headshots.
A headshot lives on LinkedIn, your website and your business card for years. What you wear decides half of how it reads. Here is what works, and what to leave at home.
Start with what the photo is for
A lawyer, an actor and a yoga teacher need different headshots. Dress the way you would on a good day at work, one step more polished. If you are not sure, bring two options and we decide together in the studio.
Colors that work
- Solid colors beat patterns. Navy, charcoal, deep green, burgundy and soft blue flatter most skin tones.
- Avoid small stripes and tight checks. They can create a wavy effect on camera.
- White and very bright colors pull the eye away from your face. Use them as a layer under a jacket, not alone.
- Match your brand if you have one. A touch of your brand color makes the photo feel like yours.
Necklines and fit
- A headshot shows your shoulders and chest, so the neckline is the outfit. V-necks and open collars lengthen the neck; crew necks work well under a blazer.
- Clothes that fit well look better than expensive clothes. Avoid anything too loose at the shoulders.
- Iron or steam everything the night before. Wrinkles show.
For actors
Casting directors want to see you, not the clothes. Simple, fitted tops in solid colors that bring out your eyes. Bring one look for drama and one for comedy if your agent asks for both.
Glasses, jewelry and grooming
- If you wear glasses every day, wear them in the photo. Anti-glare lenses help; we adjust the light for reflections.
- Keep jewelry small. One piece is enough.
- Get a haircut a week before, not the day before. Bring a comb, powder or lip balm for touch-ups.
Bring two or three tops on hangers. Changing the top is the easiest way to get two different headshots from one session.
The day of your session
- Sleep well and drink water. It shows in the eyes and skin.
- Bring your outfits on hangers, not folded.
- Arrive a few minutes early to settle in.
- Don't worry about posing. We guide every angle and expression.
